India is hot and often humid for most of the year. The fabric of your t-shirt decides how comfortable you feel in that heat. Cotton and polyester are the two most common t-shirt fabrics, and they behave in opposite ways. This guide compares them so you can choose.

#Why cotton suits Indian heat

Cotton fibres absorb moisture and let air pass through the fabric. In dry heat, such as in Delhi or Jaipur, this keeps you cool and comfortable. Cotton also feels soft on the skin and causes fewer rashes.

The weak point of cotton is drying. In humid weather, such as in Mumbai or Chennai, a cotton tee that is soaked with sweat stays wet for a long time.

#When polyester is better

Polyester does not absorb much water. Instead, it moves sweat to the outer surface of the fabric, where it dries quickly. Many sports brands call this moisture-wicking or dri-fit fabric.

This makes polyester better for the gym, running, cricket and other sports. It also dries quickly after rain in the monsoon.

The weak points of polyester are heat and smell. It can feel warm in still, hot air, and it holds body odour more than cotton.

#Where blends fit in

A cotton-poly blend mixes the two, for example 60% cotton and 40% polyester. It shrinks less than pure cotton, wrinkles less and dries faster. But it breathes less than pure cotton.

A blend is a good choice for travel and for tees that you want to keep a sharp shape. For everyday summer wear, pure cotton still feels cooler.

#Other fabrics to know

  • Combed cotton is cotton with the short fibres removed. It is smoother and pills less.
  • Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides.
  • Linen breathes very well but wrinkles a lot.
  • Bamboo and modal feel very soft and cool, but they can be less durable.
  • Hemp blends are strong and breathable.

#How to check the fabric

Read the label first. If a product page does not list the fibre, ask the brand. For a quick test at home, see the burn test in How to Check T-Shirt Fabric Quality.

#Frequently asked questions

Is cotton or polyester better for summer in India?

Cotton is better for daily summer wear, because it breathes and absorbs sweat. Polyester is better for sports, because it dries fast.

Is polyester bad for hot weather?

Not for sports, where it dries sweat fast. For daily wear in still, hot air, it can feel warm and hold smell, so cotton is more comfortable.

What is a cotton-poly blend?

It is a fabric that mixes cotton and polyester. It shrinks and wrinkles less than pure cotton, but it breathes less.

Does cotton shrink more than polyester?

Yes. Cotton can shrink in hot water or a hot dryer. Polyester hardly shrinks. Pre-shrunk cotton shrinks much less.

Which t-shirt fabric is best for sweating?

For exercise, choose polyester or a performance blend, because it dries fast. For daily wear, choose light cotton, because it breathes.
