Acid Wash T-Shirts: How They Are Made, How to Care for Them, Where to Buy
Acid wash tees have a faded, marbled look that makes every piece a little different. Learn how the wash is done, how to keep it looking good, and which Indian brands sell the most.
Acid wash went from almost no Google searches in India to a steady audience in five years. Interest peaks in May, July and August. In the Desi Drip directory, Iconic Munk alone lists 58 acid wash pieces. This guide explains how the look is made and how to keep it.
#What acid wash means
Acid wash is a way to fade a garment after it is dyed. The name is a little misleading. The process usually does not use a strong acid. It uses a bleaching chemical.
The basic process has four steps.
- A factory dyes the tee a solid colour, often black, grey, brown or blue.
- Workers soak porous stones, usually pumice, in a bleaching chemical.
- The tees and the stones tumble together in a machine. Where a stone touches the fabric, the chemical removes some colour.
- The factory stops the chemical, rinses the tees and washes them.
The stones touch each tee at different points. So the faded pattern is different on every piece. That is part of the appeal.
#Where the look came from
Acid wash first became famous on denim in the 1980s. Acid wash jeans and jackets were a big part of rock and pop fashion in that decade. The look faded out in the 1990s. Vintage and grunge styles brought it back in the 2010s and 2020s, and streetwear brands moved it onto oversized tees and hoodies.
#Acid wash vs other washes
Several washes look similar. Here is how they differ.
| Wash | How it is done | Look |
|---|---|---|
| Acid wash | Stones soaked in a bleaching chemical | Strong, marbled contrast |
| Stone wash | Plain stones, no chemical | Soft, even fading and a softer feel |
| Snow wash | Similar to acid wash, often with a finer pattern | Small, speckled white spots |
| Mineral wash | A mineral or bleach process for a chalky finish | Soft, dusty colour |
| Garment dye | The finished tee is dyed, not the fabric | Even colour with a soft, lived-in feel |
| Bio wash | Enzymes soften the fabric surface | No visible fade, only a softer feel |
Brands do not always use these names in the same way. Look at the product photos to judge the look.
#How to care for an acid wash tee
The wash process already weakens the dye a little. Careful washing keeps the pattern sharp for longer.
- Wash the tee alone, or with dark clothes, for the first two or three washes. Some loose dye can come out.
- Turn the tee inside out.
- Use cold water and a mild detergent.
- Do not use bleach. Bleach changes the pattern and leaves new spots.
- Dry the tee in the shade. Strong sun fades it further.
- If the tee has a print, do not iron over the print.
Some fading over time is normal. Many people like the more worn look after a year.
#How to style acid wash
Acid wash already has a busy pattern, so keep the rest of the outfit simple.
- Wear a black or grey acid wash tee with plain black jeans or cargos.
- Choose shoes in one solid colour.
- Layer an acid wash tee under an open flannel shirt for a grunge look.
- Choose an oversized or boxy cut. The fade pattern shows best on a large, flat surface. Read Boxy Fit vs Oversized T-Shirt to choose the cut.

#What to check before you buy
- Look at several product photos. The pattern is different on every piece, so your tee can look a little different from the photo.
- Check the fabric weight. Heavy fabric, about 220 to 260 GSM, holds the faded look well and keeps its shape. Read What Is GSM in T-Shirts?
- Read reviews that mention washing. They tell you whether the colour runs.
#Frequently asked questions
What is an acid wash t-shirt?
It is a dyed t-shirt that is tumbled with stones soaked in a bleaching chemical. The chemical removes colour in uneven patches and gives a faded, marbled look.
Does acid wash fade over time?
Yes, a little. Washing in cold water, inside out and away from strong sun slows the fading. Some fading is part of the look.
Is acid wash the same as stone wash?
No. Stone wash uses plain stones and gives a soft, even fade. Acid wash adds a bleaching chemical and gives a stronger, marbled pattern.
Why does every acid wash tee look different?
The stones touch each tee at different points during the wash. So the faded pattern is unique on every piece.
Can I wash an acid wash tee with other clothes?
Wash it alone or with dark clothes for the first two or three washes. Some loose dye can come out and stain light clothes.
