What to Wear to a Concert in India: A Practical Outfit Guide

Concert outfits for Indian weather and crowds: what tee, pants and shoes to wear, what to carry, and how to dress for a standing pit or an open-air show.

A concert is hot, even in winter. You stand close to thousands of people for four or five hours. A good concert outfit is about comfort and safety first, and looks second. This guide covers what to wear, what to carry and what to leave at home.

#Start with the venue

Check three things on the ticket page before you choose the outfit.

  1. Is the show indoors or open-air? An open-air ground at night gets cold in North India in December and January. An indoor arena stays warm.
  2. Do you have a seat or a standing ticket? A standing pit means five hours on your feet in a packed crowd.
  3. What are the bag rules? Many venues allow only small bags or clear bags. Some do not allow any bag.

#The tee

A cotton tee is the best concert top. Cotton absorbs sweat and lets air through. Polyester dries faster, but it traps smell. Read Cotton vs Polyester T-Shirts for the full comparison.

  • Choose a mid-weight tee, about 180 to 220 GSM. A heavy 260 GSM tee is too warm in a crowd. Read What Is GSM in T-Shirts? if the number is new to you.
  • Choose a dark colour. Dark tees hide sweat marks and spilled drinks.
  • An oversized or boxy fit lets air move around your body. A tight tee sticks to you.
  • A tee with the artist or band on it is a concert tradition. Wear it to the show, not only after.

#Pants and shorts

You will stand, jump and dance. Pick pants that move with you.

Deep pockets with a zip keep your phone and wallet safe in a crowd. An open back pocket is the easiest pocket to pick.

#Shoes

Shoes matter more than any other piece. People will step on your feet.

  • Wear closed shoes. Sneakers with a firm sole are best.
  • Wear shoes you have already broken in. New shoes give blisters after hours of standing.
  • Do not wear slides, sandals or flip-flops in a standing pit.
  • Do not wear white shoes that you want to keep white.

#Layers for open-air shows

An open-air ground gets cold after sunset, mostly in Delhi, Chandigarh and other northern cities in winter. A tied jacket gets in the way in a crowd. Choose one of these instead.

#What to carry

Keep it small. A large bag is often not allowed, and it is hard to hold in a crowd.

  1. A small crossbody bag or a belt bag worn in front of you.
  2. Your phone, with the ticket downloaded. Mobile networks often fail in big crowds.
  3. ID, a little cash and one card.
  4. Earplugs. Concert sound is loud enough to cause ringing in the ears.
  5. A power bank, if the venue allows it.

#Frequently asked questions

What should I wear to a concert in India?

Wear a breathable cotton tee in a dark colour, loose pants with zip pockets and closed sneakers that you have already worn in. Add a light layer for open-air shows in winter.

Can I wear an oversized t-shirt to a concert?

Yes. An oversized cotton tee lets air move around your body in a crowd. Choose a mid-weight fabric, about 180 to 220 GSM, so it is not too warm.

What shoes are best for a concert?

Closed sneakers with a firm sole are best. Avoid slides and sandals in a standing pit, because people will step on your feet.

Can I take a bag to a concert?

It depends on the venue. Many venues allow only small or clear bags. Check the bag rules on the ticket page before you leave home.

What should I wear to an open-air concert at night?

Add a layer that you can remove fast, such as a light zip hoodie or an open overshirt. Northern cities get cold after sunset from December to February.
