In our scan of 149 Indian streetwear brand websites, 80 brands mention embroidery, across 1,844 product listings. Many brands use it as their "premium" detail, mostly for chest logos. This guide explains how embroidery differs from a print, the stitch types you will see, and how to check and care for an embroidered tee.

Stitch count is the number of stitches in a design. A bigger, denser design needs more stitches and more machine time, so it costs more. Read DTF vs Screen Print vs Puff Print vs DTG to compare the print methods.

Satin stitch suits small chest logos. Chain stitch gives a retro, hand-made look.

#How to check embroidery quality

  1. Turn the tee inside out. Look at the back of the design. A good embroidery has a backing fabric, called stabiliser, behind it. This stops the fabric from stretching and puckering.
  2. Check for puckers. The fabric around the design must lie flat. Wrinkles around the edge mean the fabric was too thin or the backing was missing.
  3. Check the edges. Satin stitches must sit close together with no gaps where the tee shows through.
  4. Check for loose threads. Jump threads are the threads that join one part of a design to the next. A good finish trims all of them.
  5. Check the fabric weight. Embroidery on a thin tee pulls and puckers. A heavier tee, about 220 GSM or more, holds it better. Read What Is GSM in T-Shirts?.

#Is the backing scratchy?

The backing sits against your skin. Some brands cover it with a soft lining or a fused patch. If the back of the design feels rough, wear a thin tee under it or choose a tee with a covered back. Check the inside of the chest when you try it on.

#How to wash an embroidered tee

  • Turn the tee inside out.
  • Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle, or by hand.
  • Do not use bleach. It fades coloured thread.
  • Do not wring the tee. Press the water out.
  • Dry it flat or on a hanger in the shade.
  • Iron from the back with a cloth between the iron and the embroidery. Do not iron directly on the thread.

#How to style an embroidered tee

A small embroidered logo is a quiet detail. It suits outfits where a large graphic is too loud.

  • A plain tee with a small chest logo, straight jeans and loafers for a smart-casual look.
  • Under an open overshirt, where the logo shows at the chest.
  • With pleated trousers for the office. Read Can You Wear an Oversized T-Shirt to the Office?.

#Frequently asked questions

Is embroidery better than print on a t-shirt?

Embroidery lasts longer and has a premium texture. It does not crack or peel. A print is better for large designs, fine detail and lower prices.

Does embroidery last longer than print?

Yes. Embroidery is stitched into the fabric, so it does not crack or peel. Thread colours can fade a little over many washes.

Why is an embroidered t-shirt more expensive?

Embroidery is priced by stitch count. A bigger design needs more stitches and more machine time.

How do you wash an embroidered t-shirt?

Turn it inside out, wash in cold water on a gentle cycle, and dry it in the shade. Iron from the back with a cloth over the design.

Can you iron an embroidered t-shirt?

Yes, from the back. Put a cloth between the iron and the embroidery, and do not iron directly on the thread.
