DTF vs Screen Print vs Puff Print vs DTG: T-Shirt Printing Explained
What is DTF print, and how is it different from screen print, puff print and DTG? Learn how each method works, how it feels, how long it lasts and how to wash it.
Product pages in India now name the print method, because buyers ask. Google searches in India for "dtf printing" grew about 11 times in five years, and searches for "puff print" grew about 54 times. The print method changes how the design looks, how it feels on your skin and how long it lasts. This guide explains the four methods that you see most often.
#The four methods at a glance
| Method | How it works | Feel | Colours | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DTF | Print on film, then heat-press onto the tee | Smooth layer on top of the fabric | Full colour, photo detail | Small batches, many colours, any fabric |
| Screen print | Push ink through a mesh stencil | Soft (water-based) or slightly rubbery (plastisol) | One screen per colour | Large batches, bold flat colours |
| Puff print | Screen print with an ink that rises with heat | Raised, soft, 3D | Usually one to three colours | Logos and text that you want to feel |
| DTG | An inkjet printer prints into the fabric | Softest, almost no layer | Full colour, photo detail | 100% cotton, light colours, one-off designs |
#What is DTF print?
DTF means direct to film. The design goes onto a film first, and the film then transfers the design to the tee.
The process has five steps.
- A printer prints the design onto a clear plastic film. It prints the colours first and a white layer on top.
- A machine spreads a fine powder on the wet ink. The powder is a glue that melts with heat.
- A heater cures the powder, so the design becomes a ready transfer.
- A heat press presses the transfer onto the tee for a few seconds.
- A worker peels off the film. The design stays on the fabric.
DTF works on cotton, polyester and blends. It prints full colour and fine detail, and it has no minimum order. This is why many new Indian brands use it for small drops.
#How DTF feels and how long it lasts
A DTF print is a thin layer on top of the fabric. On a small design, you barely feel it. On a large design that covers the whole back, the layer can feel smooth and a little plastic-like. It also breathes less than the fabric around it.
A well-pressed DTF print lasts for many washes. Bad pressing is the main cause of problems. If the press is too cool or too short, the edges lift and the print cracks. Buy from brands that show close-up photos of the print and that give a care guide.
#What is screen printing?
Screen printing is the oldest of the four methods. A printer makes a screen, which is a fine mesh stretched on a frame. The mesh is open only where the design goes. The printer places the screen on the tee and pulls ink across it with a rubber blade. The ink passes through the open parts onto the fabric.
Each colour needs its own screen, so a five-colour design needs five screens and five passes. The setup takes time and money. But once the screens are ready, each extra tee is fast and cheap to print. This is why screen printing suits large batches.
Screen printers use two main types of ink.
- Plastisol ink sits on top of the fabric. The colours are bright and the print feels a little rubbery.
- Water-based ink soaks into the fabric. The print feels very soft, and on a heavy tee you can hardly feel it.
A good screen print usually lasts as long as the tee. Some Indian labels, such as Ministry of Sauce, hand screen-print every tee in-house.
#What is puff print?
Puff print is a type of screen print. The printer adds a puff additive to the ink. When the print goes through the heater, the additive expands and the ink rises. The result is a raised, soft print that you can feel with your fingers.
Puff print works best for logos, text and simple shapes. Fine detail and thin lines do not rise well. Most puff prints use one to three colours.
Puff print became a signature of Indian premium streetwear. In the Desi Drip directory, 56 brands mention it. Heavy fabric (220 GSM and more) gives puff print a flat, firm base. Read What Is GSM in T-Shirts? to learn more about fabric weight.
#What is DTG print?
DTG means direct to garment. A large inkjet printer prints the design straight onto the tee, the same way a desk printer prints on paper. The ink soaks into the cotton fibres.
DTG gives the softest feel of the four methods. It prints full colour and photo detail with no setup. But it works best on 100% cotton. On polyester, the ink does not hold well. On dark tees, the printer first lays down a white base, and the colours can look a little faded after many washes.
#Which print method is best?
No method is the best for every tee. Use this guide.
| You want | Choose |
|---|---|
| A print that lasts as long as the tee | Screen print |
| A raised, premium logo | Puff print |
| A full-colour, detailed design | DTF or DTG |
| The softest feel on a cotton tee | DTG, or water-based screen print |
| A design on polyester or a blend | DTF |
The method alone does not decide quality. A careful DTF print beats a careless screen print. Look at close-up photos and reviews before you buy.
#How to wash printed t-shirts
These steps protect every type of print.
- Turn the tee inside out before you wash it.
- Wash it in cold water. Hot water softens the ink and the glue.
- Do not use bleach.
- Dry it in the shade. Strong sun fades the colours.
- Do not iron directly on the print. If you must iron, iron the tee inside out on low heat.
- Do not put a DTF or plastisol print in a tumble dryer on high heat.
#How to identify the print on a tee
If the product page does not say, use touch and sight.
- A smooth layer with a slight shine, and a sharp edge you can feel, usually means DTF.
- A raised, spongy surface means puff print.
- A flat print with solid colours, often slightly thick at the edges, usually means screen print.
- A print that feels like the fabric itself, with soft edges, usually means DTG or water-based screen print.
#Frequently asked questions
What is DTF print on a t-shirt?
DTF means direct to film. The design is printed on a film, covered with a heat-melt glue powder, and then heat-pressed onto the tee. It gives full colour on any fabric.
Is DTF print durable?
Yes, when the brand presses it correctly. A good DTF print lasts many washes. Wash the tee inside out in cold water and do not iron over the print.
Which is better, DTF or screen print?
Screen print usually lasts longer and feels softer with water-based ink. DTF is better for many colours, fine detail and small batches. Both are good when the brand does the work with care.
Does puff print come off in the wash?
A good puff print stays for a long time. It can flatten a little over many washes. Wash it inside out in cold water and do not iron it.
What is the difference between DTF and DTG?
DTF prints on a film and then transfers the design onto the tee. DTG prints straight into the fabric. DTG feels softer, while DTF works on more fabric types and looks brighter on dark tees.
